About Lynn Purse

Twenty-four years ago, I was digging the first bed of my new garden when a butterfly landed on my flowered shirt, looking for something to eat. There were no flowers, no sustenance, but I made a solemn promise that I would create a garden for it to live in and thrive. And so I did. And along the way I learned to create a habitat for all creatures, I learned how to photograph and film the life in the garden, and began to teach others how to create their own personal garden sanctuaries.

Gertrude Jekyll said “a garden is a grand teacher” and I know this to be true. Over the years, I have made garden presentations throughout the U.S. and Canada, published photographs in magazines, books and blogs, and designed and taught numerous classes on garden design and garden videography for a variety of organizations, including Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh. I have 30 years experience as a college professor and course designer in music and have made many connections between my life as a composer and as a gardener, especially through my blog Composer in the Garden. All art forms share similar attention to color, texture, balance and nuance - I find that orchestrating a garden is very much like orchestrating a piece of music.

It is my greatest joy to share my garden and expertise with others, through classes, webinars, presentations, and publications. If you are interested in working with me, I would love to hear from you.
